A broken spring is usually obvious — and almost always needs a same-day call. Here's what to look (and listen) for before you pick up the phone.
Door won't lift, or only rises a few inches
With one or both springs broken the opener can't overcome the dead weight. Forcing it trips the motor or burns the circuit board. Disconnect the opener and don't try to muscle the door up — it can come crashing down.
Gap in the spring coil
Look up at the torsion shaft. A clean break leaves a visible gap of an inch or two in the coil. If you can see daylight through the spring, it's broken. The matching spring is fatigued and will fail soon.
Door feels heavy or drops fast
A single remaining spring leaves the door unbalanced — it drifts down hard when opened and slams on close. Every cycle torques the remaining spring past its rating and shortens its life.
